Nygaards Bataljon
Information in English

Nygaards Bataljon is a 143 year old organization, its purpose is to educate young boys in the fields of discipline and drill parading; to promote good friendship and to wake and stimulate the interest for light athletics, soccer and shooting (with rifles or bow and arrows).

Being one of Bergen's 12 buekorps, Nygaards Bataljon is a unique organization; a buekorps' closest relative is the Boy Scouts, but there are some fundamental differences. Since the foundation of the buekorps back in 1857, it has been run by the boys themselves; a buekorps' supreme authority is a council consisting of the so-called officers, i.e. members aged 15-21. The council is elected by the boys.

The buekorps consists of 4 groups of soldiers, each group is supervised and trained by a lieutenant (an officer). There are two more groups; a group of drummers (soldiers especially trained to keep step during marching, they have a repertory of traditional marches) and a group of banner officers, during marching this group marches in the front led by the chief and his aide.

The buekorps is active in the months from February to June, this time is from no on referred to as the season. In the first part of the season it is focused on drill training, i.e. marching and parading. Later on, the main activities are soccer, athletics and marching in the city of Bergen. In the last part of the season we go on pack marches with two of the other buekorps, shoot with rifles and bows & arrows. The season is completed with an outing, where amongst other things, medals and cups are awarded to soldiers and officers having distinguished themselves, e.g. in marching or running.
